Dane Miller's freshman season has been validated.
The Rutgers forward has been named to the Big East's all-rookie team, as chosen by the league's 16 coaches. But the rubber-stamp on Miller's success was made even cleared as he was one of only two freshman to be chosen as unanimous selections to the team.
Cincinnati freshman Lance Stephenson — the league's preseason rookie of the year choice — was also made a unanimous selection.
“To be unanimously picked for the all-rookie team is a great honor,” Miller said Sunday in a statement. “I would like to thank all of the Big East coaches for voting for me. With the help of my coaches and teammates, I feel that I have grown as both a person and as a player this season. I’m just going to keep working hard so that I get better every day.”
The Big East rookie of the year will be announced Tuesday at the Big East Tournament, at Madison Square Garden.
Miller is the second straight Scarlet Knights player to be named to the Big East's all-rookie team. Sophomore Mike Rosario was honored last season. In total, the Scarlet Knights program has had 11 Big East all-Rookie team members. Rutgers has never had a freshman named Rookie of the Year since joining the Big East in 1995-96.
“Dane really deserves this,” Rutgers coach Fred Hill said in a statement. “He has done a tremendous job. It’s extremely demanding for a freshman to excel in a conference as talented and physical as the Big East. For him to do so is a credit to his work ethic, his passion for the game and his willingness to be coached. Dane is a student of the game and he has the potential to develop into a very special player.”
Miller, who last month was named a Big East Rookie of the Week for three consecutive weeks being the first freshman to accomplish the feat since Syracuse's Carmelo Anthony, is second among league rookies in scoring at 11.9 points per game. He is also second in rebounding (6.3 rpg), as well as third in steals (1.1), assists (2.6) and blocks (1.2).
Overall, Miller is averaging 9.7 points per game.
